Vintage Baseball Cards Still Hold Value
By Richard Mueller of Topps 1952
You don't have to look far to find a story in the media about the baseball card hobby being "dead" but don't tell that to someone looking for a 1952 Topps card in high grade. While it's true that not as many kids collect cards today as they did in the early 1990s and that the card companies have made it very confusing by producing so many products, the hobby as a whole is not "dead". Topps, Upper Deck and Panini (formerly Donruss) remain viable companies, making profits thanks to their high-tech card designs and inclusion of autographs and bits of game-worn or game-used memorabilia. However, the healthiest segment of the market revolves around vintage cards. The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle remains the post-War era's most sought-after and valuable card and prices aren't coming down. In fact, any card from the 52 Topps set that's in good shape can always find a home because the supply is still much less than the demand. It was Topps' first baseball card set and quite frankly, the cards are works of art. Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Duke Snider, Eddie Mathews, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra and others are in this set and they sell for hundreds--or thousands of dollars depending on condition. Even low grade cards sell easily. In fact, any pre-1970s cards have held their value quite well over time. While we can't recommend buying just any vintage baseball card in any condition, it's a proven fact that rare sports cards and memorabilia like the 1952 Topps set, any quality Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle memorabilia or a high grade rare baseball card has often performed better than the stock market. No, your 1987 Bo Jackson probably isn't going to appreciate in value too much. The demand isn't even close to the huge supply that's available. But in the high-grade vintage baseball card market, you've got a good shot to own something very cool while having it perform pretty well in your investment portfolio.
