Upper Deck 2010 Baseball Will Begin New Era

By Richard Mueller of Sports Collectors Daily

For 20 years Upper Deck held a Major League Baseball trading card license. Last year, however, MLB opted for an exclusive partnership. Topps takes over this season as the only licensed card manufacturer—some 30 years after it last had an exclusive.

Upper Deck promises that it will produce baseball cards, but the company will have to be a little creative since they can no longer use logos and trademarks of big league teams. Upper Deck does have a license with the MLB Player’s Association, meaning they will be able to use images on their 2010 issues. They also have exclusive contracts with the estates of some important Baseball Hall of Famers and will be able to feature them in special insert cards that could include cut signatures, memorabilia cards and other ventures.

One can make a safe bet that Upper Deck will continue with many of its most popular lines, hoping to convince customers that it can produce a relevant, collectible card set without an official MLB partnership.

Upper Deck 2010 cards will bear watching from the standpoint of how they will choose to compete with Topps. They will no doubt have to concentrate on customer loyalty gained over the last 20 years. Expect a strong emphasis on baseball card and hobby shops, as they look to maintain a share of the market. Upper Deck hit a home run by signing Ken Griffey Junior and making him the first card in their inaugural 1989 baseball set. They’ll need to make a similar sort of splash this year.
