Topps 1952 Baseball Cards May Be Wise Investment
By Richard Mueller
Topps 1952 baseball cards are among the most popular of all-time. That's no secret for serious collectors. When you are home to the most popular and iconic Mickey Mantle card ever produced, it's easy to make the leap. However, the Mantle card's value is just part of what makes Topps' first-ever widely produced baseball card set such a hit. The 407-card set includes a number of Hall of Famers. Remember, it also has the Topps Willie Mays rookie card, the company's first cards of pioneers Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby. It has beautiful renditions of players on New York's three popular teams of the time; the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants. The final series of cards is extremely scarce. Mantle is in that series and so is the last card in the set, another Hall of Famer named Eddie Mathews. Investors could also do worse than buying the #1 card in the set, Andy Pafko. Virtually impossible to find in high grade, even semi high quality Pafko cards go up in value on a regular basis. Yet even the common cards in the 52 Topps baseball set are works of art. Topps redefined the baseball card with its inaugural set. The size and use of photographs simply hadn't been done before. Buying commons is one way to get your feet wet, even if you can't hope to ever afford some of the superstars in the set. If you have money, the 1952 Topps set is a pretty wise investment as long as you shop for value with every card you buy. Look for cards that are of good quality, well centered with limited corner wear. The demand should always outpace the supply. Topps 1952 baseball cards are a piece of collecting history. The set launched Topps as the big fish in the sports collectible field and it's 50-plus year reign shows no sign of stopping. |
