Racing Memorabilia Market Should Benefit from Hall Opening

By Rich Mueller

Millions of dollars worth of racing memorabilia is now on permanent display at the new NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The opening of the Hall is a long time coming for NASCAR fans. Virtually every other sport has had a place to honor its legends except NASCAR. Officials wanted to make sure when they finally were able to hammer out details and select a location, that the Hall would prove worthy. By all accounts, it has.

There are hundreds of important pieces of NASCAR's long history on display, many of which would command thousands of dollars at auction. Instead, they're painstakingly displayed as an aid for telling the story of this once regional and now very mainstream sport.

One trickle down affect from the attention focused on the new facility and its displays should come in the racing memorabilia and NASCAR autograph market. Gearheads have always been interested, but the Hall should generate some newfound respect among the masses. NASCAR is Americana and seeing some of the neat items on display will likely turn fans into collectors, in much the same way as the baseball, football and basketball halls of fame have done. It's hard not to see some of the old signed NASCAR items and not want at least a Richard Petty autograph.

Racing memorabilia encompasses a lot of different avenues, however. From autographs to trading cards to Daytona 500 programs to pieces of race-used cars and die-cast models, there's something at every price level or interest.

Wow. What took NASCAR so long to build the place?
