Packers' Aaron Rodgers: Right Man at Right Time

Replacing a legend is never easy. Aaron Rodgers probably knew he'd face a huge task when he was drafted out of the University of California in 2005. Brett Favre wasn't ready to retire, even though he was already beginning to broach the subject. Yet here were the Green Bay Packers, drafting a his replacement. Rodgers served as Favre's backup, an uneasy tension in the air in the early part of their relationship. It's clear now, however, with Favre gone and Rodgers now the Packers' starter, that the bold move was a good one for the long term health of the franchise. Not only did the Packers need a quarterback with potential, they needed a player with the attitude and proper countenance for the transition. Favre's ugly departure from Green Bay didn't make it easy at first, but Rodgers hung in there despite the jabs from still-bitter Fans of Favre. He was able to block out all of the controversy and play well in his first year as a starter. He played hurt, like Favre, and he was clearly a 'team player', hosting catered dinners for his offensive line and blossoming quickly into the leader of the Packers' offense. Rodgers' coolness under fire has been one of his most admirable qualities and while he's still improving, it's quite possible that the Packers drafted not only an NFL star in the making, but the perfect quarterback to replace the legend that was Favre. |
