Huge Price for T206 Card

A T206 Joe Doyle "NY Nat'l" error card sold at auction recently for over $186,000 and it wasn't considered high enough quality to receive a numeric grade from the grading company that encapsulated it. The Doyle card is graded Authentic and appears to have been trimmed or otherwise altered at some point. That fact did not scare away bidders. The Doyle error card is one of less than ten known copies, far less than the total T206 Honus Wagner, considered the 'holy grail' of the hobby. The T206 set is highly popular and there simply aren’t enough Doyle error cards to satisfy the number of serious T206 set collectors. A printing error accounts for the Doyle variation being so scarce. Piedmont Tobacco initially confused N.Y. Americans pitcher Joe Doyle with the more popular 2nd baseman Larry Doyle of New York's National League club. When the card was printed around 1910, the notation “N.Y. Nat’l” was printed below Joe Doyle’s name, rather than the “N.Y. Amer.” designation found on the cards of his teammates in the T206 set. Apparently it didn't take long for the tobacco card printer or someone else to catch the mistake. On future printings, they simply removed the “Nat’l” part of the phrase to keep collectors of the day from being confused. The 'corrected' T206 Doyle cards are obviously considered common. |
