How to Keep Your Child From Tipping Furniture Over on Themselves
By Rich Mueller of Newborn Furniture
Trying to stop kids from climbing on furniture is a very difficult task but there are steps you can take to keep your little ones from getting hurt. Statistics show thousands of children need medical attention every year as a result of falling while climbing on furniture or grabbing onto a piece of baby furniture and pulling it over on themselves. Often times, these injuries happen when the child is left alone--and it doesn't take more than a few seconds. Dressers, cabinets, baby cribs, armoires and other less heavy furniture is commonly involved in these accidents, but anything a child can grab onto puts them at risk. How can you baby-proof your house to avoid such an occurrence? First, and most obvious, is not to let children climb on drawers (and they'll try). Secondly, don't open more than one drawer at a time. That can cause instability and provide more options for the child to grab onto. Thirdly, keep heavy objects away from the top of a piece of furniture that has shelves or drawers unless it's specifically designed to hold a TV or similar item. Look for furniture that comes with tip restraints. Those that conform to recently developed standards should not tip over when drawers are open about 2/3 of the way or when one drawer is open and weight of about 50 pounds (representing the child) is placed inside that drawer. If you buy furniture that doesn't have tip restraints, they should be relatively easy to find at your local hardware or home improvement store.
