Game Worn Jerseys Become Big Business

Game worn and game used sports memorabilia were once considered hand me down material by pro and college sports teams. No more. In fact, virtually all major professional sports leagues and teams have discovered the sports memorabilia market to be a profitable addition to their bottom line by selling their game worn apparel and equipment. Game worn jerseys have become popular collectibles as sports fans join die-hard collectors in seeking a tangible, colorful and rare link to their favorite sport, players and teams. Steiner Sports pays millions of dollars to teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and other teams to re-sell game used items. They were among the first, but have definitely not been the last company to dive head first into the market. JO Sports now owns the rights to sell authentic game worn jerseys from several NFL teams. The league sells other game memorabilia through its charity auction site. Major League Baseball also has an auction site and MeiGray Group offers game jerseys from several NBA, NHL and minor league franchises. Some big league teams sell their own game worn items through their clubhouse stores, all authenticated as they are removed from play. In fact, MLB started its own authentication program to apply holograms to items in order to ensure authenticity. Vintage game worn items are extremely popular with collectors as well. Even the trading card companies have gotten in on the act by putting swatches of game used uniforms and patches into their cards, turning them into 'memorabilia cards' that are coveted by collectors. Adding autographs and creating limited edition versions have meant small jackpots for collectors lucky enough to pull them from packs.
