Daytona 500 Wins Elevates McMurray's Profile

Just as winning a major golf championship can turn an ordinary pro into a high profile star within hours, so can victory in NASCAR's Daytona 500. The "Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing" comes in the season's first race and it doesn't decide a championship, but the history behind the event and money involved so great that it is unquestionably the biggest race of the year. Jamie McMurray has driven on the periphery of NASCAR for about ten years, getting his start in the Busch Series, then landing a ride in the Cup Series. Never a big star, McMurray has fought and scrapped his way from one year to the next, hoping to break through with a solid team behind him. This, apparently, might be the year. Yet even if he doesn't win another race in 2010, McMurray's win at Daytona means his name is now engraved on the most coveted trophy of all. He'll be a guest on the big talk shows, a man in demand not only before the next race, but throughout the first half of the season. McMurray has now earned his place among the coveted autographs in NASCAR. A set of Daytona winning drivers isn't complete unless it has his signature. He'll be in demand from fans who want an autograph or piece of memorabilia. His appearance fees have probably already gone up. For most NASCAR teams and his colleagues among the drivers, winning Daytona couldn't have happened to a better guy. McMurray has worked hard to earn his place in NASCAR history and there's no doubt he'll enjoy it despite the demands of newfound fame. |
