Brock Lesnar vs Big Show

By Richard Mueller

Brock Lesnar Big Show

Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show was part of The Surivivor Series in 2002. It was for the 2002 WWE Title.

The Big Show, whose real name is Paul Wight, weighed a reported 500 pounds and certainly put Brock Lesnar as an underdog for the first time during his WWE career. Lesnar, introduced with a weight of 295 pounds, was defending his WWE title against The Big Show during the match.

At the time, Lesnar was the youngest champion in WWE history. The event took place at a sold out Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Madison Square Garden crowd cheered for Lesnar out of the gates. "Lesnar, Lesnar!", was chanted at the start of the wrestling match.

Lesnar was dealt several big blows in the first round by the 7 foot tall, 500 pound Big Show. Lesnar showed off his strength by landing a side suplex in the first few minutes in retaliation. Lesnar picked up The Big Show several times during the short match to the shock of the Madison Square Garden fans in attendance.

How could Brock Lesnar pick up a 500 pound Man Beast above his head? Lesnar may have lost the fight but he gained an adoration from fans who were impressed with the amazing strength of the future MMA fighter.

Big Show countered with several knees to the ribs. Still in the 1st Round, Lesnar retaliated with a steel chair thrown into the ring from his manager. Lesnar later looked to have pinned The Big Show but the ref was pulled away before reaching the count of three by the manager of The Big Show.

Lesnar chased the manager but was then sucker punched by The Big Show with the steel chair. Brock Lesnar was pinned just a few seconds later to lose the WWE Title.

The Big Show earned his second WWE title with the controversial win. He would lose his title just one month later to Kurt Angle.

Big John Studd was the parent of one of the kids on my son's ice hockey team when Adam was 7.

I recall one time he ran the clock and I kept the score and penalties. He shook my hand and I remember thinking, "I hope this guy let's go!!" His fingers were like Kielbasa sausages.

All the kids on the other teams wanted his autograph. He was really a friendly guy. He passed away March 20, 1995.

He was 6 foot 10 and weighed in at 364 pounds. I can't imagine 500 pounds of all muscle.

Great sports story, Richard. I've never had the desire to become a fan of wrestling. However, you painted a well written intel.
Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes.
