Baseball Cards Complete Sets Becoming a Bargain

By Richard Mueller of Sports Collectors Daily

There are bargains to be found in the sports card market these days and one of the areas where this is true is the baseball card set.

Set collecting was once the stronghold in the hobby, as collectors chased after each card in whatever set they may have started through the purchase of packs or boxes. They filled out ‘want lists’ of missing card numbers and filled them at a local shop, baseball card show or mail order dealer.

Over the last dozen years or so, however, that mode has changed. Set collectors are few and far between with many newer hobbyists and kids looking only for single, limited edition autograph cards that can be found by buying packs or shopping online.

We like sets, though, because of their timelessness. While today’s superstar eventually becomes yesterday’s news, the full baseball card set is a good representation of a certain year or card company.

With prices now very low, especially on certain sets, it might be a good time to consider collecting them—not for investment, really, just for enjoyment.

Baseball card sets –especially the Topps factory sets you can find online—are fun to own and provide a great snapshot of any era.

Award-winning journalist Rich Mueller is the editor of Sports Collectors Daily, the top sports collecting news source for the sports card/sports memorabilia industry.

Collecting is a great way to share time with children and or grandchildren.
Best wishes.

I always thought set collecting was a part of the marketing strategy of the companies producing the cards to sell more cards. It doesn't surprise me that looking for the individual card is now a marketing strategy to sell the sets.
