Baseball autographed by team is a step above
By Richard Mueller of Signature Baseballs
Perhaps the most undervalued type of sports collectible are the baseballs autographed by big league teams of days gone by. While single-signed balls are what many collectors prefer, the baseballs signed by teams are much harder to locate and what's more, they tell a better story. Team-signed baseballs are somewhat rare, especially older balls from the 1920s (when team signed balls became somewhat popular) through the '60s. It wasn't easy to get every player on the team to sign the same ball. Many times, only teams that made the World Series signed a lot of them. That's the time when it was obvious that the team's success meant creating tangible memorabilia. Today, there are more baseballs autographed by teams floating around because it's been a popular practice that's even sometimes demanded by the front office to satisfy clients, fans and charity auctions. Baseballs signed by teams that have huge followings, like the Red Sox and Yankees carry a premium value. There's great demand and the prices are higher. Balls that carry the autographs of Hall of Famers can also affect the value as can baseballs that have deceased players' signatures. Still, a check of eBay shows many signed baseballs from various teams in good condition and even professionally authenticated selling for a cheap price. Baseballs signed by teams tell the story of that club. Who played on the team at that very moment. Whose signature was the most fluid and whose was the worst. Did the manager sign it? Who was awarded the ball's 'sweet spot' to put his signature? Baseballs autographed by championship clubs are prized but it could be argued that less successful teams that carried big name stars might be the best buy of all.

Thank you for sharing this good collectors advise, Richard. I didn't realize that team balls were so rare. Keep up the good work. Great image! Best wishes. Frederick
